February 23, 2017 -- Women and their bodies will be the focus of a lecture series at Santa Monica College (SMC) next month, college officials announced Wednesday.

“Women, Society, & Power,” a series of presentations and talks this spring, "will explore a variety of issues confronting and empowering women in today’s world," organizers said.

The presentations -- which are sponsored by the SMC Associates -- are free and will be held on the Santa Monica College main campus at 1900 Pico Boulevard. Seating is strictly on a first-arrival basis.

The series kicks off March 7 with a screening of the documentary “Embrace," the story of Taryn Brumfitt, a "body image activist" whose unconventional before-and-after photo posted on the internet in 2013 received more than 100 million views and "sparked an international media frenzy," organizers said.

"The film explores the global issue of body loathing, and inspires us to change the way we feel about ourselves and think about our bodies," organizers said said.

On March 9, Jenn Schaefer, a certified eating psychology coach and founder of Embodhied, leads a special Q&A session and community conversation about "how to cherish your body and be a catalyst for positive change in our culture," organizers said.

On March 21, “Attractive and Fat” campaign founder Jes Baker talks about "the importance of body autonomy, self-love, mental health and the 'Health at Every Size' movement," organizers said.

The first three events are co-sponsored by the Associated Students of Santa Monica College and take place at 11:15 a.m. in Humanities & Social Sciences Lecture Hall 165.

The series concludes April 22 with a talk by Los Angeles-based writer and street artist Padhia Avocado, who dicusses "the eco-feminist aspects of her art," organizers said.

Avocado's art "explores the often undiscovered and obscure elements of our interior human landscape, and has been described as ‘psychological commentary,’" event organizers said.

The talk, co-sponsored by the SMC Art Department, takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Art Studio 126.
